From Prague to Vienna....
Through Bohemia's woods and meadows
4-10 June 2012There are still a few places on our 2012 study tour, which will focus on three of Central Europe's most fascinating cities – Prague, Brno and Vienna. We'll spend two nights in each of them.
Our journey will take us through the picturesque Czech countryside that was so beautifully evoked in the music of Bedrich Smetana and we'll visit remote fairytale castles, sprawling monasteries and small country towns with cobbled squares and onion domed churches.
We'll be able to wonder at the crowning achievements of Austro-Czech Baroque and Gothico-Baroque architecture, including the beautiful Strahov libraries and the twin St Nicholas churches in Prague, a strange ossuary in Sedlac, the bizarre pilgrimage chapel of St John on the Greenhill in Zdar and the imposing Karlskirche in Vienna.
We'll also see the flowerings of fin-de-siecle Jugendstil design and the cool cubes of Austro-Czech modernism and we'll visit examples of housing and town-planning from the interwar and communist periods.
En route, we'll be able to sample the home-brewed beers of Bohemia and the crisp white wines of Moravia, as well as tucking into the rich cream cakes of the Vienna coffee houses. Our hotels are all in central locations and well-placed to tap into local culture and nightlife, so if you’d like to take in an opera or a concert, this is your opportunity.
