Glasgow and the West of Scotland
Our 2012 UK tour focuses on the work of CR Mackintosh and is led by John McKean, who has written a number of books (and addressed the Society) about Mackintosh. But Glasgow and its environs are about much more than Mackintosh.
We fly from Gatwick, staying in the new Novotel, five minutes' walk from The Glasgow School of Art (library, top right) and Willow Tearooms (the lesser-known but lovely Ladies luncheon room, rebuilt in the Kelvingrove Art gallery, is top right). Other visits on our city itinerary include the Hunterian Art gallery, where there are reconstructions of interiors from Mackintosh's own home and some of his paintings, including A southern town (centre, right). We will spend two complete days in the city, with a coach available to ensure we make the most of the time.
On other days, the coach will help us to explore further afield, taking in Mackintosh’s domestic masterpiece, The Hill House (bottom right), in the north Clyde resort of Helensburgh. More adventurously, there will be a boat trip from the south Clyde resort of Wemyss Bay to the Isle of Bute and visit Mount Stuart, Britain’s most amazing and opulent late 19th century aristocratic residence.
Target price is around £400 per person (plus single room supplement). The list is growing but a few places are still left. To join, contact John McKean by e-mail or at a Wednesday evening lecture.
