Anglo-Catholicism in Victorian and Edwardian Brighton

October 30 at 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Montage of four churches

A study day run by Dr Sue Berry FSA, FRHistS.

The day begins with short talks at the Friends' Meeting House about what we mean by Anglo-Catholicism, its development in Brighton and its strong links to Rev Arthur Wagner and his circle. We then visit churches built or co-funded by Wagner. We look at why they were built where they were and for whom, and compare the differences in their layout and decoration. The churches to be visited are St Paul's in West Street, Church of the Annunciation in Washington Street, St Martin's in Lewes Road and St Bartholomew's in Ann Street.

Participants must be prepared to find their own way to the churches viewed in the afternoon. Brighton is too busy for coaches or groups shepherded from one to the next. The total walking distance in the afternoon is less than one mile. Details, including maps, will be provided and good time allowed between each church.

Tickets cost £15.00 and for comfort and safety are limited to 25. You can download an introduction and timetable for the day here and book now through Eventbrite (both open in a new window).
